VAT rate
How VAT is calculated
Have the price without VAT? Multiply by 1 + the rate. With 24% VAT: €100 × 1.24 = €124.
Have the final price and want it without VAT? Divide by 1 + the rate: €124 / 1.24 = €100. Don't take 24% off €124: that gives €94.24, which is wrong.
Which VAT rate applies
Reduced rates are set in Annex III of the Greek VAT Code (ν. 5144/2024). Anything not listed there, or in doubt, is 24%. For special cases, ask your accountant.
- 24%, the standard rate: e.g. clothes, electronics, fuel, drinks, accountants' and lawyers' services.
- 13%: most food, food at restaurants (not the drinks), hotel stays, passenger transport, gyms, water.
- 6%: medicines, books and newspapers, electricity and natural gas, fertilisers and animal feed, theatre, concert and cinema tickets.
- 4%: works removing barriers for people with disabilities in buildings.
- The most common mix-up is coffee: packaged or take away it is 13%, served at the table 24%. The same goes for soft drinks and juices.
Reduced VAT on the islands
Since 1 January 2026 rates are 30% lower on some islands: 24% → 17%, 13% → 9%, 6% → 4%, 4% → 3%. The reduction does not apply to tobacco and vehicles.
